Meet Stephanie, Admin Volunteer

After retiring, two years ago, from a 26-year career at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN),   Berkhamsted resident Stephanie decided to give back to her community in a meaningful way – by volunteering at The Hospice. Stephanie had a wealth of experience in Communications and Marketing when an internal career change led her to rise to Director of Governance at the RCN.

Recently, she’s been supporting our HR team to ensure that DBS checks are up-to-date and that records are being successfully transferred over to the new HR system. Stephanie has also brought her governance experience into this new and meaningful setting by working with the Governance team to compile evidence for CQC inspections, help with archiving, and audit patient records alongside our nursing staff.

Having lived in the town for nearly 30 years, Stephanie sees The Hospice as a cornerstone of the local community, saying “I’ve come across quite a few people in the community that have either benefited from The Hospice’s work or have worked here themselves. The volunteer role sounded interesting – a way of giving something back in my retirement and, I have always enjoyed meeting new people.”

With over a year’s experience under her belt, Stephanie has found her volunteer journey particularly fulfilling and encourages others to explore the wide range of opportunities available. She added, “I was really surprised at the variety of tasks that you can undertake to support The Hospice. Things I just didn’t really realise. I knew about the shops and the fundraising side, of course. But there are so many opportunities at The Hospice itself to support admin, reception, or even in the gardens. I would definitely recommend attending one of the intro sessions they run, to find out exactly what opportunities exist here.”
