Jog On's 10th birthday!

Reviewing the last ten years

This September marks 10 years since the amazing Heather and Erica launched Jog On, and with it started raising money for our hospice care through their beginners Couch to 5k course.

Over that time they’ve raised a whopping £33,209.85, making a huge difference to our care. To mark the occasion we caught her with the duo to hear more about their support and all things Jog On running.

The amount raised by Jog On over the 10 years is incredible. How do you feel about Jog On’s support for the Hospice and the impact it has on the care?
“We’re very proud to support a local charity that offers such amazing care, at very difficult times in people’s lives. We’re aware how much money the hospice needs to raise every year and are delighted to continue to contribute to this.”

Why the Hospice?

“As a nurse I’ve helped care for many people at the end of their lives and know how important it is that we get this right. The Hospice go above and beyond helping to ensure that patients and their families are truly valued and cared for at such a difficult time. We're very fortunate to have a hospice in our town,” shares Erica.

Has Jog On changed in the 10 years, and if so, how?
“The demographics have changed since Covid, with a wider range of people attending due to more flexible working hours. We’ve introduced earlier sessions to allow people to Jog On before their first zoom call of the day. We are busier than ever because companies recognise the importance of people having time off in the day, to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing.
We have embraced the rise of social media to help build our Jog On community. We’ve introduced more Strength classes as this has been increasingly recognised as being an important part of running fitness.”

What’s your favourite thing about Jog On?
“Seeing lifelong friendships made, the fun, laughter, and the supportive community we’ve built. At Jog On we have always said the social aspects are equally as beneficial as the fitness benefits. We always feel so proud whenever people stop us in the street and tell us how much Jog On has changed their lives. We’ve had tears and lots of laughter over the years – we know Jog On is a safe place for everyone to be part of, no matter what they’re going through in life – connections with no judgment.”

Are there any highlights or standout moments from the 10 years?
“Every time we see our Couch to 5k runners cross the finishing line as they complete their first 5k park run. Over the last 10 years we have seen this 30 times (3 courses a year over a decade!) and our sense of pride is still as great as ever.”

What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved?
“Just do it! We’ve had so many people join us, some of whom have been watching us out running and seen our social media for years trying to find the courage to sign up, saying they wished they’d done it earlier. It’s a win, win - they are getting fit and raising vital funds for the Hospice.”

What does the future hold for Jog On?
“We are hoping to keep 'jogging on' for another decade!”
