Catherine’s Story: Walking the Ridgeway for the Hospice

“This year, I’ll be walking the whole Ridgeway for the Hospice with my friend Lesley."

It’s such a positive thing to do. The Hospice is a wonderful organisation and a valuable asset in our area.

We’ve always lived in Hemel, and Mum used to have the Hospice collection boxes in our house. My father-in-law was cared for by the Hospice and they were so brilliant. My husband also really benefitted from calls with the Hospice bereavement service. He still talks about it now.

I’ve walked the Ridgeway [shorter route] for the Hospice every time it’s been on, but this is the first time I’m doing the full route which takes five days. It’ll be challenging, but the sense of satisfaction and the scenery and all the beautiful countryside is mind-blowing. Everybody is friendly and people look out for each other.

This is a great opportunity to walk the entire Ridgeway without having to camp out and carry everything with you. The Hospice arranges the food and accommodation and transports our clothes for us. All you have to think about is walking. I expect to feel tired but very happy, with a real sense of achievement at the end.

To fundraise, I’m doing a raffle and an Italian night at home for my friends. I’ll charge them to come, and I’ll also organise a curry night. The Hospice uses the money to the best advantage of the patients. The care is fantastic. For us, it was unbelievable.”
