Volunteer for Good
Our team of over 1,300 volunteers is implicit to the work of the Hospice of St Francis.
They help to raise money, care for patients, welcome visitors, support families, highlight our work in the community and keep everything running smoothly. Our volunteers go the extra mile and ensure that all of our patients and their loved ones receive ‘total care when time is precious.’

If you are from an organisation that wishes to support the work of the Hospice, why not call us to find out how your team could help or see if there are opportunities for individual persons.
Bigger teams are welcome to do some gardening, prepare for Fundraising events or engage in our Trading work. You can learn about the care provided, give support to one of the teams and any projects the Hospice may need assistance with and find out more about financially supporting the Hospice, directly funding patient care.
If your company has a specialist skill or can offer to help the Hospice by providing your expert service, do get in touch with our Corporate Fundraiser.
We celebrate the work of our volunteers and show our appreciation through:
- Celebrating Volunteer’s Week; taking place in June each year
- Acknowledging exceptional volunteers and nominating them for Hospice UK or local charity awards
- Thanking our volunteers every time they come to help!
- Handing out Long Service Certificates and badges to those who have volunteered for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years.
If you would like to find out more about our volunteering opportunities, please get in touch or if you would like to attend one of our ‘in person’ Intro to Volunteering sessions at the Hospice, which are as follows:
Wednesday 19th September: 2pm-3pm
Wednesday 22nd October: 2pm-3pm

Why Volunteer?
The reasons why people volunteer are varied and many.
You may want to volunteer in memory of a loved one or you could be wanting to support the local community. Whatever the reason, get in touch to discuss volunteering and the kind of role you might like to do.
“The Hospice cared so wonderfully for my Mother. Volunteering lets me give something back.”
“I took early retirement from work. I initially joined the fundraising committee, progressed to my choice of gardening and then into the finance office as well! The voluntary work eased my path into retirement as I had no time for hobbies when working.”
“My role has given me a greater capacity to understand bereavement and the compassion to care"
