Our People
Meet Kim, our Highfield Owned shop Manager
When Kim first stepped into the Highfield Owned charity shop, eight years ago, she wasn’t planning a career change – she was simply answering an advert in the window while out walking with her son. That small decision sparked a journey that transformed her life and strengthened her local community.
Kim began volunteering on the till, bringing her retail experience from Marks & Spencer and her caring nature from previous roles with Age UK. Her enthusiasm and commitment quickly stood out. After seven years as Assistant Manager, Kim became Shop Manager in April last year. Today, she leads a team of 32 volunteers, creating a space that feels more like a community hub than a shop.
For Kim, the role is about more than sales. It’s about connection, confidence, and purpose. She has seen volunteers grow from shy and nervous to confident and skilled, even moving on to paid work. “Just give it a go – you might really enjoy it,” she says to anyone considering volunteering.
Kim loves the sense of belonging the shop offers – customers pop in for a chat, volunteers share tea and cake, and everyone works together to support the Hospice. Every pound raised goes back to providing care and comfort for those who need it most.
Her story is a reminder that volunteering doesn’t just change lives – it builds communities.
