Meet Logan - Duke of Edinburgh Volunteer at Marshalswick Owned

For Logan, a 17‑year‑old student at Sandringham School, volunteering at the Marshalswick Owned shop, for the Hospice, has become a defining part of his Duke of Edinburgh experience. He first joined the team over two years ago while working toward his Bronze Award and has continued ever since, as he now looks to complete his Gold Award.

Balancing his studies in four A‑levels, Logan dedicates an hour every week after school to volunteering as part of the Gold requirement of 52 weeks of service. His role involves preparing games and books for the shop, ensuring the shelves remain fully stocked and occasionally serving customers on the till. Originally from Melbourne, Logan moved to the UK five years ago and considers the Hospice shop an important part of his local community. He chose to volunteer there because of the warmth and friendliness he’d experienced as a customer. As Logan explained, “Whenever I’d come into the shop, they were always really friendly to me. So, it felt only natural to want to give a little back.”

Since starting his Gold Award, Logan has completed around 15 weeks of volunteering, building strong relationships with staff and learning new skills along the way. What he enjoys most is knowing that every task he completes – whether restocking the shelves or serving customers – helps generate revenue for the shop and, in turn, the Hospice. “I like that cycle and how everything comes together to support others,” he added.

For anyone considering volunteering, Logan wholeheartedly recommends it, describing the shop as friendly, warm, and consistently filled with smiles.
