Heather has been an ardent and consistent presence within the Hospice’s volunteer community for 36 years of continuous service. Recently she has become an ambassador, acting as a spokesperson for the Hospice across the local community.
Heather’s background as a librarian and school governor helped shape her civic instinct, explaining that, “I enjoy company and love having things to do. It really improves my wellbeing and mental health.” She became an integral member of the Hospice’s flower arranging team and monthly craft group. She even stepped in to walk a patient’s dog over one Christmas holiday. Her bubbly nature and articulacy make her well suited to representing the Hospice in schools, community groups and local fundraisers. Whether speaking at a garden party or receiving a cheque, Heather relishes the opportunity to share the story of the Hospice’s impact.
Heather’s connection grew even more profound after her husband, John, was cared for there – a time she recalls with gratitude for the great compassion and kindness offered. For Heather, volunteering is social, purposeful and fulfilling. She loves contributing wherever she can be useful and thrives off feeling connected to her local community.
“To me, the Hospice is a huge jigsaw puzzle all fitting together for good,” Heather reflects. After so many years of selfless dedication and effort, she added that, “It’s a place where nothing is forced, but everything is offered.”
