After a long and successful career in the aerospace and defence industry, Gary retired six years ago. Inspired by the exceptional care his mother received at the Hospice over two decades ago, Gary was determined to give something back to the community.
Then he discovered Returned to Glory – a unique furniture showroom with workshop initiative in Berkhamsted that upcycles donated furniture as well as selling homeware and interior goods to raise funds for the Hospice – and it has proved the perfect fit for his skills and passions. Gary joined the team about 18 months ago and quickly embraced the variety of tasks involved. Donations arrive at the back door and each item is assessed with some pieces going straight to the shop floor, while others need cleaning, repair, or complete transformation. Gary thrives on these challenges, whether it’s restoring a cabinet or repurposing a discarded table into a stylish bench. “If someone buys something I’ve worked on, I have a real sense of pride. It’s a double win – someone loves what I’ve made and the money supports the Hospice.”
Beyond the craftsmanship, Gary values the camaraderie. “I’ve made a lot of new friends here – it’s a really diverse bunch. It’s collaborative, fun, and it feels like every day is a school day.” With woodworking and painting teams, plus shop floor volunteers, there’s always someone to share knowledge with, teach or lend a hand with a project.
His advice to anyone considering volunteering? “Come and have a look. It’s not like a job you have to do, this is something you actually enjoy. You give back to the community, but you also gain new skills, friendships, and satisfaction.”
