Sharing memories

This summer, we’ve been running a new reminiscence group for people living with dementia, and their carers, in the Hospice’s Spring Centre.

With a different theme each week, from music to holidays, participants are encouraged to bring along meaningful objects from the past, to talk about in the group. The aim is to spark shared memories and conversation while also providing some respite for carers. “We can see how much it means to the couples to talk about their memories,” Occupational Therapist Melissa said. “There’s loads of participation and happiness. People are thriving.”

One week, a live band visited and everyone shared their favourite songs and sang along. “One of the gentlemen who doesn’t really participate much in the activities stood up and was clapping with the music, and you could see how happy he was,” Melissa said.

The group offers simple activities and questions to encourage everyone to connect with their memories and each other. “We’ve definitely seen a bond between everyone,” Melissa said. “They’re comfortable sharing and it’s been really personal.”

The group will run for five weeks and will hopefully result in participants taking away some fond memories and meaningful connections.
