Meet Ali, Volunteer Receptionist

Ali is a mum of three, a ladies fitness instructor and previously enjoyed a long career in advertising on Fleet Street. But every week, she steps away from her own business to volunteer as a receptionist at The Hospice – a place that holds a deep personal meaning for her.

Ali’s journey into volunteering began after her mother was cared for by Hospice nurses during her final months in 2023. “They were so wonderful,” Ali shares. “My mum wanted to die at home, and The Hospice team made that possible. I just wanted to give something back and working here makes me feel closer to her.”

Now, Ali spends four hours a week greeting visitors, answering calls, and bringing her upbeat energy to the front desk. “I’m a real people person,” she says. “It’s nice doing something different from my day-to-day work. The Hospice isn’t a sad or scary place at all – it’s full of warmth and community.”

Ali’s story is a powerful reminder that volunteering comes in many forms. “You can bring your own skills,” she enthuses. “There’s so much more to a hospice than people realise. I would like to put my marketing skills to use here next. I’m even trying to get my partner to volunteer in the gardens after he retires!”

Her advice to anyone considering volunteering? “Just try it. You might find a new purpose, meet amazing people, and feel closer to your community.”
