Meet Nicky, the Manager of our Bovingdon Owned shop, which recently celebrated its first anniversary. Drawing on an extensive retail career mostly spent with John Lewis in London, she has transformed this vibrant space into a true hub at the heart of the local community.
“Bovingdon has really embraced us, and they've begun to understand that the free care the Hospice offers depends on us supporting each other,” said Nicky. Presentation plays a big part in the shop’s success, with professional stylist, Jan, helping to organise high-quality fashion displays by colour each week while the shop sells and gift-wraps products from number twenty. Never knowing what treasures might be unearthed when sorting donations, “keeps the role fun and fresh” according to Nicky. Her dedicated team of staff and volunteers bring their unique time, talents and enthusiasm to the floor while she focuses on unlocking their existing skills and discovering new ones.
The shop actively connects with the next generation to think about sustainability and community which aligns with the Hospice’s values. Appearing at primary school assemblies, Nicky helps local children understand both environmental responsibility and the vital role of the Hospice. As she says, "You're being sustainable and you're helping the Hospice – there’s no reason not to want to come and shop here." This was proved by the hugely successful ‘Off to Uni’ display selling essential items to students departing for halls last September (scheduled again for this year!).
With a blend of retail expertise and community spirit, Nicky and her team have turned the Bovingdon shop into a shining example of how sustainable shopping can provide a lifeline for local hospice care.
