Jo Chappell, Voluntary Services

For more than three years, Jo has been at the heart of the Voluntary Services team, bringing warmth, energy and a deep commitment to ensuring every volunteer feels valued and supported at the Hospice.

After a varied career across corporate roles, educational settings, and community initiatives, Jo found her way to the Hospice at exactly the right moment following lockdown – a place where her skills, empathy and love of people could come seamlessly together. Her position has evolved significantly into a broad coordination role, supporting the onboarding, training and day-to-day needs of hundreds of volunteers across the site. From kitchen support and Meet and Greet teams to wellbeing, bereavement services and admin roles, Jo helps ensure everyone is confident and prepared for the work they do.

But for Jo, the real joy lies in the people. As she says, “Interaction with the volunteers and just having that shared warmth…that's key.” Whether she’s checking in with someone in the kitchen or welcoming a new volunteer to their first session, Jo believes in building genuine, human interactions that transform a mere collection of roles into a community across the Hospice.

And if someone is undecided about joining? Jo’s advice couldn’t be clearer – “Come up here and have a look round. I guarantee we will find something suitable for you if you're keen on volunteering.”
