Bob (One Jump Beyond)

When faced with profound family challenges, Bob has always used his unique energy and community standing to find a way forward. He is now using that infectious drive to support the Hospice that has cared for his daughter, Abbie (25), since last year.

Abbie, who was born with cystic fibrosis underwent a double lung transplant in 2021 and was later diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, which brought her to the Hospice. Reflecting on the impact of the Hospice’s support, Bob says, “It’s so different to going to a hospital. It’s a lot easier for us as a family.” Inspired by a taxi driver who provided free rides to Great Ormond Street Hospital and had invited him to skydive, he created the One Jump Beyond group skydive event. By merging his vision with the Hospice’s own event, he brought together twenty local residents who accepted this daunting challenge of taking to the skies. To date, twelve members have already jumped with the remaining eight scheduled to follow.

Previously, Bob and his friends completed charity bike rides as One Pedal Beyond, raising thousands for MIND and Prostate Cancer UK. “It’s been my way of dealing with things,” he said. “It’s easier for me to come and do something than just sit there and cry my eyes out.” He is already looking ahead too, with Two Jumps Beyond scheduled to go ahead in 2027. Next time, he wants to take part himself. “I really want to do it. I was waiting for permission from my daughter and I’ve got it now.”
