Pam Macpherson founded The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted in 1979 to provide a compassionate end-of-life experience for people in our community. Inspired by Dame Cicely Saunders, Pam was the first and only Black woman to found a hospice in the UK.
Pam inspired locals to fundraise, volunteer and donate to make hospice care accessible to everyone. She made people feel they were changing the world and that the world was there to be changed.
Since Pam founded the Hospice forty-six years ago, we have supported over 35,000 local people.
Pam died in September 2016, having devoted a large part of her life and energy to The Hospice of St Francis.
