Ian's Respite Testimonial

Following a knee operation, Ian stayed in one of the Hospice’s new Respite for Good rooms and shared his experiences:

“Everything about the Hospice of St Francis and Respite for Good has been splendid, particularly the aftercare I’ve been getting. The physio was wonderful, I’ve had hand and foot massages, and after nine days, I’m ready to go home feeling that much better.

Living alone, it’s difficult to do certain things after an operation and there’s a chance of making mistakes or even falling over. I wouldn’t have been able to put shoes and socks on [following my operation], but at the Hospice they showed me the easiest way to do it. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep by myself at home in the way I’ve slept here. At the Hospice, I’ve always got a button to press if I’m in difficulties, whereas at home I hope for the best and that’s not good enough in the early stages of recovery.

The benefit is that it’s a safe, friendly environment. I’m looked after by healthcare assistants, and a lot of preparation has been done to make sure that it’s the right environment and the right staffing to help me.

Previously, I had a hip operation and went to a care home. They weren’t able to offer physio and I had to try to follow the exercises that were given to me by the hospital on paper. The exercises weren’t always easy to do. It’s so much better to have a physio who’s so caring and helpful and able to give me exercises that she could see suited me. They helped me so much that I now feel confident to go home.

Everything about Respite for Good is welcoming, calming and helpful to recovering. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
