Dementia group's summer meetings

Everyone in the group was totally engaged

Our Dementia Support Group gathered for a set of six sessions this summer, in the Hospice’s Spring Centre. Fifteen people attended the group – both people with dementia and their carers – which was led by our Wellbeing Team.

Amber, who led the group, explained, “Every week we do something different so there is something for everyone,”  Activities included creating flower mandalas, painting pots, exploring sound bowls, and using dance and movement for relaxation.

“We’ve seen the carers relaxing as much as the people living with dementia,” Amber said. “They really enjoy chatting and helping each other, and they’ve also been taking walks together in our gardens after each session.”

One carer had previously struggled to motivate her partner to leave the house, but the support group was so enjoyable for him that he was happy to go to the Hospice.

“Everyone in the group has been so engaged,” Amber said. “We’ve had them up and dancing, and we check in with everyone to see how they’re feeling.”
