Why Volunteer at The Hospice?
Make a Real Difference
Volunteering with The Hospice of St Francis means joining a mission dedicated to providing exceptional care and comfort to patients and their families during life’s most challenging times. Your contribution helps ensure that individuals receive compassionate support when they need it most. Every hour you give makes a tangible difference in the lives of those in your community
Flexible Opportunities
We understand that your time is valuable and schedules vary. That’s why we offer a wide range of volunteer roles designed to fit around your availability. Whether you can commit a few hours each week or dedicate an entire day, we’ll work with you to find a role that suits your lifestyle. Our goal is to make volunteering rewarding and manageable without disrupting your other commitments.
Gain Experience
Volunteering is also a fantastic way to grow personally and professionally. Whatever stage of your career journey you’re at, volunteering can help you. From developing communication and teamwork to leadership and problem-solving, volunteering offers hands-on experience that employers value.
Real-world experience can set you apart in job applications. Many of our volunteers have used their roles to strengthen their CVs and secure employment. Working in a supportive environment helps you gain confidence in your abilities and meet new people. Regular volunteers can request references for future job applications.
If you’re a student aged 14 or above, volunteering can help you complete your Duke of Edinburgh Award, gain valuable experience, and make connections that last a lifetime.
Variety of Roles
From public-facing positions to behind-the-scenes support, there is a role for everyone. Opportunities include helping in our shops, assisting with fundraising events, providing administrative support, maintaing the Hospice gardens, assisting in the kitchen and more. Each role plays an important part in delivering our services and maintaining the high standard of care we are known for.
Inclusive Environment
Experience isn’t a requirement – what matters most is your willingness to help. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, regardless of age, background, or skill set. Our inclusive approach ensures that everyone has the opportunity to make a positive impact, learn new skills, and feel valued as part of a supportive team.
Utilise your Corporate Charity Days
Charity days are when individuals, often employees of a company, use sponsored corporate time to volunteer for the Hospice. This can include one-off events or regular sessions, where people might help a charity with its work, such as sorting donations, or providing skills-based services for free. The activities can be organised by the company or chosen by the individual, and they are often seen as a way to support the community, boost employee morale and build teamwork.

This huge honour is testament to the passion, skills and time which our volunteers (aged 14-92!) give us across 70 very varied roles.
