Biggest losers shed 23.5 stone for Hospice challenge

09 April 2019

The Hospice of St Francis is congratulating a band of 18 amazing fundraisers who completed its sponsored 12-week fat and fitness challenge, Biggest Loser, raising a total of £15,000 to support its care.

The group lost a combined total of 150.9kg (332lbs) - equivalent to 23.5 stone - with the help of Everyone Active, who gave them access to fitness classes, gyms and swimming pools across Dacorum to help motivate them to lose weight. All funds raised will enable the Hospice to continue to provide its free care for local people, helping them to live their precious lives well.

The winner of the event was Lauren Breed, 32, a nurse from Hemel Hempstead, who lost an incredible 2.5 stone (27.1% of body fat), after signing up during a night time feed with her sixth-month old, inspired by a friend who had taken part before.

Mum-of-two Lauren said: “Biggest Loser was the kick-start I needed to feel happier and more confident in my own body and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! I’d like to thank the Hospice for holding the challenge and for all the support I’ve received from staff at Everyone Active, and also to my Biggest Loser teammates, family and friends – they’ve all been incredible.

“It’s been amazing for my confidence and as a nurse myself I wanted to support the Hospice because I understand the importance of providing patients with exceptional palliative care. I have had patients and family members stay at the Hospice and I know about the great work they do.” Lauren has raised a fantastic £845 for the Hospice.

Members of the group are continuing to support one another and they plan to stick to their new regimes. Lauren, who receives a year’s free membership to Everyone Active, adds, “I wish we had another 12 weeks!”

Lauren Parker, Hospice Events Fundraiser said, “The challenge really does work, and its huge thanks to the Everyone Active team for their dedication and support that helps make this fundraising event such a success for our participants, and the Hospice.”

James Sexton, Contract Fitness Manager at Everyone Active, said, “The participants this year showed a great team bond and often exercised together and shared meal plans which also helps with long term motivation and continued progress.”

A celebratory party was held Saturday 30th March for the team, to congratulate them on their achievement. Lauren added: "It's been a real pleasure to see this fantastic group of fundraisers each week. Not only have they raised an incredible amount of money to support our Hospice care, they've also made huge changes to their lives and are now much happier and healthier for their commitment.”
