Charles is married to Val who has been a volunteer at the Hospice since 1991 and they have two adult children. They have lived in Berkhamsted since 1986 and Charles belongs to both Berkhamsted Rotary and Berkhamsted Golf Club.
Charles started his professional life as a Management Trainee at William Crawford & Sons in Edinburgh from 1960 to 1963.
He then moved to Abbey National plc., who were formerly a Building Society, in 1964, where he had various appointments in their branches in Edinburgh, Hamilton, Carlisle and Dundee.
In 1975 he became Regional Manager, Scotland until 1984 when he moved to head office in Baker Street, London. Here his roles included General Manager of Branch Operations; Operations Director; European Director; Managing Director, New Businesses; Managing Director Retail Bank then plc Board Director on flotation in 1989.

Charles also has a number of non-executive directorships. These included NHBC from 1996 to 2002 where he was Director Deputy Chairman. he was also a Member of the Remuneration Committee and Chairman of the pension Fund Trustees.
From 1999 to 2004 he was a Senior Non-Executive Director, Chairman of the Remuneration Committee and a member of the Audit Committee at MBS International Bank.
He was a Director and member of the Finance and Audit committee at Ford Bank plc (often known as Ford Credit) from 1999 to 2007 and was appointed Deputy Chairman of Barratt Developments plc. from 2002 to 2008
