Brave brothers on African challenge
(Herald Express 28/9/2006)

DRIVEN: from left Roger Sharp, Chris Turner, Terry Turner and Penny Bird with Martin the Zebra.

A daring duo are setting out on a 3,000-mile challenge to help the Hospice of St Francis.
Brothers Terry and Chris Turner are to take part in the Plymouth Dakar challenge - also known as the Ultimate Banger Challenge - a grueling drive from the UK to West Africa.
To make the task even more difficult, participants must use a vehicle that costs less than £100.

Chris, aged 58, of Tinkers Lane, Wigginton, said they were both looking forward to the drive in their 1988 VW Golf.
He said: "It's an adventure. My brother's 65 and he's just retired and I said to him some years ago that we've never had an adventure and we thought it was about time we did. This seemed like a great idea.
"We both enjoy driving and it was a great opportunity to put something back into the community as well."

The challenge begins on December 28 and the Turners have already begun making lists of the equipment and what needs to be done to ensure the challenge goes without a hitch.
Chris said: "The biggest thing is preparing the vehicle and keeping it running. We will also need to take lots of water, petrol and food."

Among the possible hiccups along the way will be a dangerous border crossing into Senegal and a three-mile stretch of road through a minefield.
Chris said: "That should be a very interesting day! "But making sure we have enough water is going to be our main problem and it's definitely going to be a test of brotherly love. We will also be traveling with Martin the Zebra, a gift from the hospice, and he will be keeping a blog on our website so people can keep up to date with our progress."

The Turners are hoping to raise as much sponsorship as possible before they set off for the hospice, and when they arrive at their destination the car will be auctioned to raise money for local charities in Africa.
Chris said: "The trip will coincide with the hospice opening and we have been following the appeal in The Gazette.
"We thought raising the money for the hospice was ideal for them to help raise the profile. "They don't get enough money and they do a wonderful job."
