IN MEMORY OF MARTIN: Tony and David Purdy rode their motorbikes from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise cash for the hospice.
A cheque for £4,000 will swell the coffers at The Hospice of St Francis, following a motorcycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groats by members of the Vespa Club of Great Britain.
Ten members of the club took part - including two from Kernel Hempstead - each raising money for their own charities.
Tony Purdy and his son David, from Chaulden, Kernel Hempstead, will present the cheque at the hospice's annual cricket match.
GE Healthcare in Amersham, where Tony is a safety coordinator and David is a lab technician, sponsored the father and son to help with the relocation of the hospice to newly-built premises in Shootersway, Berkhamsted.
The riders set off at 9am on May 27 arriving on June 3, having ridden approximately nine hours each day.
This was the first time Tony and David had attempted such a distance.
Tony said: "I did it for my brother who died in January.
"It was brilliant -a fantastic experience and something I will always remember."
David said: "It's something I had to do for Uncle Martin. He was a wonderful man and meant a lot to us. The ride was something we did to remember him by." The total raised for the Big Brick Buy for the Hospice of St Francis now stands at more than £300,000.
Hospice paints picture of success
Artists across Dacorum are sharpening their pencils and mixing their paints ready to support the Hospice of St Francis.
The hospice has organised a paintathon to help bring in funds for the new site, while also providing an opportunity for artists to display their work at the new hospice building. Elvira MacCrimmon said: "The idea is to get local artists, or anyone who wants to paint, to do a painting in any medium and raise money for the hospice. All the paintings will then be displayed in the new hospice building."
Pupils at Lime Walk School in Hemel Hempstead got into the spirit of things after a visit from local artist George Sear, who is putting in an entry to the paintathon. and helped inspire the youngsters to produce works of their own during his visit.
Elvira said the students got involved in the project as part of their art week.
"All the pupils produced paintings and raised more than £100," she added.
Entrants in the paintathon must raise at least £50 through sponsorship and donations to enter and that will include a painting board supplied by Berkhamsted Arts and Crafts.
Elvira added: "All the entries will be displayed in the Civic Centre in Berkhamsted on September 23 and judged by the Mayor of Dacorum." Full details are available on 01442 862884.
