BRAINTEASER: Georgina Gosen and Michael Andrews wrack their brains during the sponsored spell and help to raise money for their school's chosen charity, the Hospice of St Francis.

Tight-lipped and brainy students at Egerton Rothesay School in Berkhamsted have raised more than £2,500 for the Hospice of St Francis.

While older students were wracking their brains as part of a sponsored spell, younger pupils kept their mouths firmly closed in a sponsored silence.
In total the pupils, aged from three to 11, raised an impressive £2,800 towards the Big Brick Buy appeal for the Hospice of St Francis.

Liz Martin of Egerton Rothesay said: "It all went very well. It was a great effort from the pupils because most of them are only young children."
Lesley Mead, who teaches three to five-year-olds at the school, said she was proud of the young pupils who had kept silent.
She said: "They didn't make a peep! We were amazed that so many lasted so long. Some lasted as long as 10 minutes which for their age is brilliant. It was a brilliant 10 minutes of silence!"

The school picked the hospice as its chosen charity for this year, with cake stalls and coffee mornings being held to keep money rolling in.
Liz Martin added: "The school likes to support local causes and I'm sure everyone knows someone, or has family whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The hospice is a very good local charity and we were happy to raise money for them."
