PARTY TIME: for Marie and Pete Preston pictured centre with granddaughter Leah, aged six months
A Hemel Hempstead woman preparing to celebrate her 50th birthday is hoping to use the anniversary to support the Hospice of St Francis.
Marie Preston, of Berrymead, will be holding a well-deserved party, but instead of gifts she has asked that anyone wishing to buy presents should instead Dig Deep and give a donation to the Hospice of St Francis.
She said: "I love presents, don't get me wrong, but the hospice is more important. They need this new place and hopefully people will dig deeper in their pockets for this birthday."
Marie has been a supporter of the hospice since her father, Fred Waters, formerly of Everest Way, was given first-rate care before his death.
So too was her mother-in-law Edith Preston, formerly of Hawthorn Lane, Warners End.
Marie told the HeraldExpress: "It's absolutely amazing care they provide.
"They are so kind and lovely and they do everything, all the little things. They are wonderful.
"I think a lot of people don't even think about the hospice or even know about it until it affects them. But when you see the dedication of the staff and the work they do you realise the importance."
Marie works as a support helper at the Jarman Centre and husband Pete also works in caring, for Hightown Praetorian.
Marie is to celebrate her birthday on December 18 and will enjoy a party at the Woodhall Farm Community Centre.
She said: "It's a very poignant moment. My dad would have loved to celebrate my 50th with me.
"I want to feel I'm giving something back because for the time my dad was in the hospice, he was happy."
