Full steam ahead...

RALLY-HO! Hundreds of exhibitors polished up their engines and headed to the first Dacorum Steam Rally at the weekend, (pictures above and below).

Dozens of vehicles had to be dragged out of a muddy field at Potten End following an overnight deluge during the Dacorum Steam and Country Fair.

But what better place to need a tow, than a steam rally with tractors a-plenty on display?
The fields of Greencroft Farm were transformed into a village during last weekend's event. Caravans, awnings and tents were dotted around the perimeter and steam engines of all sizes, army vehicles, fire engines, bikes and a great assortment of classic cars were also on display.

The rally was opened by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Councillor Derek Townsend, who encouraged visitors to support the Hospice of St Francis.

Cllr Townsend praised the rally organisers, who had invited over 200 exhibitors and said he hoped it would become an annual event. Visitors had a chance to drive a steam engine and children could enjoy musical tractors, an old-fashioned funfair, a farm and bouncy castles. There was also a host of stalls selling bric-a-brac and anything from old farm machinery to cards, pottery, clothes and cakes.

Maureen Pike, wife of Dennis, one of the steam enthusiasts, had spent at least two weeks baking and by lunchtime on Saturday she had sold out, taking over £150 for the Hospice of St Francis.

Good weather during the day meant the refreshment area was kept busy, especially the beer tent, and there was a programme of live entertainment each day, including local band Small Town Explosion.

GOOD CAUSE: Visitors were urged to dig deep to support the Hospice of St Francis charity, whose supporter, Martin the zebra, (pictured above), could often be found trying out many of the vehicles on display for size!
