The Hospice of St Francis view equality and diversity as a creative opportunity to embrace, respond and be relevant to its local community. We recognise that we need to create an environment where all patients, carers and their families feel they are treated equally as individuals and enables our staff and volunteers to thrive and achieve their full potential.

DIVERSITY VALUE STATEMENT

Diversity is about understanding, recognising, valuing and respecting  difference in the broadest sense.  It is about creating a working culture through the implementation of practices that harness difference for the benefit of its patients, carers and families and its workforce.

Why diversity matters?

At The Hospice of St Francis we believe that the case for exploring diversity is simple:

Our patients, staff and volunteers are increasingly diverse and ever changing. We must strive to stay relevant to the needs of all our patients, employees and volunteers.

Our funding comes from various sources who expect diversity to be an integral part of our mission.

Legislation - the law is clear and supports the advancement of diversity and equality.

Our Hospice Values are set around respecting each other and embracing our diverse patients and the wider community.

OUR AIMS

  • The purpose of this Position Statement is to provide equality and fairness for all in our employment practices and not to discriminate on grounds of gender, gender reassignment, marital status (including civil partnerships), race, ethnic origin, colour, nationality, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, religion or age. We oppose all forms of unlawful and unfair discrimination.
  • The Hospice of St Francis is committed to eliminating discrimination and encouraging diversity amongst our staff and volunteers. We want our workforce to be truly representative of all sections of society and for each employee to feel respected and able to give of their best.

  • Proactively seeks feedback so we can learn and adjust our Position Statement when required

To implement our Diversity Position Statement we will:

  • Ensure all staff have annual mandatory training on our diversity Position Statement
  • Develop clear communication strategies on our diversity work which will be distributed through our various methods of communication and will meet a wide range of people and groups
  • Liaise with religious and other community groups to gather their opinions on our service, ensure that our work reaches them and they feel part of the Hospice’s mission.
  • Take proactive steps to understand, and make sure our staff understands the needs, wishes and cultures of our diverse community.
  • Promote our service in various ways considering the needs of our community
  • Take steps to ensure we can meet the diverse needs of our local population in so far as they can be anticipated, whilst ensuring every person is treated as an individual and their desires are never presumed. For instance, some female patients may prefer only to be nursed by women.
  • Promote the fact our care is free however we rely on the generosity of our community to enable us to fund the care we give. There should be no barriers, perceived or in practice, to accessing our care.

ACCOUNTABILITY

The Chief Executive is accountable for equal opportunities and diversity in both employment and service provisions. All line managers have a responsibility for ensuring that the Position Statement is applied effectively and fairly across all departments. It will be the responsibility of everyone in the organisation to adhere to this Diversity Position Statement and actively promote this within their work

The Director of Human Resources will report to the Executive Team and the Board, annually, on the data produced through regularly reviewing and monitoring practices.

The Position Statement will be agreed by the HoSF Board, and communicated to all employees and job applicants, and will be placed on the HoSF’s intranet and website.
