How we maintain our standards

We are an independent hospice, outside the NHS, and are therefore regulated by the Care Quality Commission and inspected on a regular basis.

"We found that people were cared for and treated individually, one member of staff told us that, 'through daily handovers, team meetings, knowledge of the person, and support from the doctors, we constantly review a person's condition. It depends entirely upon that person who needs the care'" Care Quality Commission, February 2013

"During our visit we observed people being treated with respect and dignity, and being offered choice and involvement in care choices. We observed staff actively listening to people and caring for them with respect; it was clear that staff were aware of people's individual wishes, such as food and drink preferences, and that staff put people's wishes at the centre of their care plan. Discussions during the multidisciplinary team meeting showed the empathy and professionalism with which staff ensure people's care is tailored to their individual needs and wishes” Care Quality Commission, January 2012

We also conduct extensive patient and carer surveys of our service following an episode of care in the Hospice or in the community.

Internal regulation

We have a Clinical Care Committee, with the support of clinical Trustees, together with a Clinical Leads group, whose role is to ensure that our care is safe, up-to-date and appropriate.

These groups consist of senior clinical staff and members of our Trustee Board and receive reports of audits, service developments and any clinical issues that are causing concern.

We have a separate Health and Safety group looking at issues that concern patient care, our staff and our volunteers.

Quality Account

The NHS requires us to report on 3 quality improvements in the previous year and suggest areas of proposed improvement for the year ahead. We have reported in detail on patient safety, clinical effectiveness,patient experience, workforce resilience and educational leadership.
