Sally Green’s story

Sally & Friends“I now have a name for our team - Breast Mates - as we all met at Hemel Hempstead School in 1971 and have remained best friends ever since! The other girls are Elaine Jones, Corinne Hancock, Anne Harradine and Melanie Gurney (in that order after me, far left).

I work at Hemel Hempstead School and have talked 3 more members of staff to do the walk too - Judith Stallworthy, Jo Taylor and Alison Allen. I am organising a Lippie and Trainer day on 6th July where the school kids can wear lippie and trainers and pay a donation for doing so.

There is a strong school link as I work here, my work friends are doing the walk, my school friends all came here. Also Barbara Sprouse who works on the Hospice of St Francis reception was my science teacher here at HHS and Jeanette Keenan our careers advisor is part of the Family Support Team at the hospice. The school also performed a concert at the hospice Light up a Life Ceremony.

OK about me now - I was diagnosed with breast cancer Dec 2005. Had a mastectomy in Jan 2006, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Reconstruction in Jan 2007. Quite a busy year! Back at work at the school now.

My friends decided to do the walk basically as my illness made them more aware of their own mortality and supporting our local hospice, which does such important work, was the obvious choice. We have all been touched my people close to us who have needed this type of care. We would like to help raise funds for the hospice as we all value the work that it does.”
