Liz – A True Inspiration
Liz Martin, from Potten End, is a 47 year old mother of three who’s world was turned upside down five years ago. Liz woke up one morning and suddenly collapsed. She had suffered a severe stroke and remained unconscious for three days. When she finally woke up, she couldn’t walk, talk or feel any movement in her body, and her brain had “totally gone”.
After months and months in hospital where she received occupational and speech therapy she finally came home. However, doctors had told Liz that she would never regain her speech or walk again. Liz had other ideas… the (bright yellow) wheelchair was immediately cast aside, the offer of a stairlift was flatly refused. “I don’t need them” she declared “I WILL walk and I WILL talk”.
This positive outlook and sheer determination has helped Liz to lead a normal busy life. Although she hasn’t regained the full use of her body (her right arm is still “pretty useless” and parts of her right leg and ankle are still numb) this doesn’t stop her from, swimming, horse riding, cooking, Pilates and constantly driving her three children from one place to another. She’s even re-learning to speak Spanish!
Now Liz has decided she is up for a new challenge. She will be participating in the 12 mile Midnight walk “Walk with the Stars” for the Hospice of St Francis on Saturday 7th July.
Fran, her neighbour and close friend says;
“I am amazed at Liz. Her utter drive, determination and strong ability not to give in has made Liz the person she is today. She is a remarkable lady and a fantastic wife and mother. She’s come so far and is a true inspiration to us all and I am so proud to have her as my friend.”
