Total care when time is precious

Day Hospice

Patients attend our Day Hospice for one day a week, on a Tuesday or Thursday, and we can welcome up to 12 patients on each day.

Goals of care will be discussed with each patient and might include:

  • planning ahead for the next phase of an illness
  • improving mobility and confidence
  • helping to manage anxiety within the family
  • giving the carer a day off a week for a few months
  • offering the support of others in a similar situation

These goals will be discussed and reviewed three monthly with a view to discharge if appropriate.

The whole Hospice team is available for those attending our Day Hospice – doctors, nurses, complementary therapists, physiotherapists, arts team, social workers, chaplain and counsellors.

Hospice minibus

We have a team of volunteer drivers who will pick patients up from home.  We also have our own Hospice minibus able to collect patients who need more help or might be using oxygen therapy.

The day extends from 10.30am until 3.00pm  and a wonderful lunch is provided as part of our care.

Patients are often transformed during their attendance at Day Hospice, becoming more confident and at ease with what the future holds, and often feel more in control of what is happening to them and their family.

Day Hospice consultation (1)

The diagnosis of cancer sent Dad into a bout of depression, a complete change of character for him.  The turning point came when he was offered a place as a day visitor to the Hospice. He had all the traditional prejudices about hospices and didn’t want to go.  In the end, we almost had to bully him into going to try and get his pain relief under control.  It was a revelation to him, and he loved being there. You lifted his depression and gave him back his love of life. I can never thank you enough.Daughter of patient, June 2008
